1. Opinion (Agree or Disagree) Essay

You are given a statement and asked to what extent you agree or disagree, requiring you to take a clear stance and defend it. • What it requires: A clear stance. You must state whether you agree, disagree, or partially agree, and spend the essay defending that specific position. • Structure: Use this structure when you must defend a single, clear position. o Introduction:  Paraphrase the prompt.  Thesis Statement: Clearly state whether you agree, disagree, or take a balanced view. o Body Paragraph 1: First reason supporting your thesis (Topic sentence => Explanation => Example). o Body Paragraph 2: Second reason supporting your thesis (Topic sentence => Explanation => Example). o Conclusion: Restate your thesis in different words and briefly summarize your main points. • Prompt: “Some people believe that artificial intelligence will eventually replace human teachers in the classroom. 2. Discussion Essay

You must objectively explain both sides of a debate before offering your own opinion. • What it requires: A balanced argument/structure. You must devote one body paragraph to explaining the logic behind longer prison sentences, another to explaining the logic behind rehabilitation, and clearly provide your own opinion. • Structure: Use this when you must examine two opposing sides and give your own view. o Introduction:  Paraphrase the prompt (mentioning both sides of the debate).  Thesis Statement: State which of the two sides you support. o Body Paragraph 1: Discuss the side you disagree with (explain why people hold this view, even if you do not). o Body Paragraph 2: Discuss the side you agree with (explain why this view is stronger and justify your opinion). o Conclusion: Summarize both viewpoints and re-emphasize your final opinion. • Prompt: “Some people think that the best way to reduce crime rates is through longer prison sentences. Others argue that education and rehabilitation are more effective. You evaluate the pros and cons of a specific trend or situation. • What it requires: Objective analysis. One body paragraph should outline the main benefits (e.g., cost savings, flexibility), while the next outlines the main drawbacks (e.g., lack of personal connection, technical issues). (Note: If the prompt asks "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?", it turns into an Opinion essay where you must choose a side). • Structure: Use this when evaluating pros and cons. If asked "Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?", use the Opinion structure instead. o Introduction:  Paraphrase the prompt (state that the trend has both positive and negative aspects).  Outline Statement: State that you will examine both the benefits and drawbacks. o Body Paragraph 1: Focus entirely on the Advantages (State 1-2 benefits => Explain => Example). o Body Paragraph 2: Focus entirely on the Disadvantages (State 1-2 drawbacks => Explain => Example). o Conclusion: Summarize the main advantages and disadvantages in a single sentence. • Prompt: “More and more people are doing business and conducting meetings through online video calls. 4. Problem and Solution (or Cause and Solution) Essay

This is an explanatory essay rather than an argumentative one. You identify why a specific problem exists and propose realistic fixes for it. • What it requires: Cause-and-effect thinking. You must use the body paragraphs to outline the primary causes (e.g., increased screen time, sedentary school curricula) and then offer practical, realistic solutions to those specific problems. • Structure: Use this to explain causes/effects and offer resolutions. o Introduction:  Paraphrase the prompt (acknowledge the existence of the issue).  Outline Statement: State that you will discuss the causes (or problems) and offer solutions. o Body Paragraph 1 (Problems/Causes): Explain 1-2 main causes or problems (Topic sentence => Explanation => Example). o Body Paragraph 2 (Solutions): Provide direct solutions to the exact problems mentioned in Body Paragraph 1. o Conclusion: Summarize the key problem(s) and restate the most effective solution. • Prompt: “In many countries, young people are becoming less interested in physical exercise. 5. Two-Part/Direct Question Essay

You are asked two distinct, sometimes unrelated questions about a topic (e.g., "Why is this happening? Is it a positive development?"). You must simply answer both parts directly. • What it requires: Direct answers. You must dedicate Body Paragraph 1 to answering the first question (the "why") and Body Paragraph 2 to answering the second question (your evaluation of the trend). • Structure: Use this when the prompt asks two distinct, explicit questions. o Introduction:  Paraphrase the prompt.  Thesis Statement: Directly answer both Question 1 and Question 2 in brief. o Body Paragraph 1: Answer Question 1 (Topic sentence/direct answer => Explanation => Example). o Body Paragraph 2: Answer Question 2 (Topic sentence/direct answer => Explanation => Example). o Conclusion: Summarize your answers to both questions. • Prompt: “It is becoming very common these days for students to take courses over the internet instead of in face-to-face classrooms.
